SUMMARY:Academic Search for Justice in Serbia
DESCRIPTION:27 April\, 2026\, 14:00 – 15:30 CETonline\nOrganised by GenderSAFE’s Central Eastern European Community of Practice \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n About the webinar\nThis session brings first-hand perspectives from Serbian academia on the ongoing\, student-led protests and their spillover into broader civic mobilization. Building from the origins of the movement – sparked by public outrage over accountability and governance failures – the speakers from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Chemistry: Dr. Maja Šumar Ristović (associate professor)\, Sladjana Savić Jovanović (PhD candidate/teaching assistant)\, and Danica Andjelic (undergraduate student) will trace how university protests evolved into wider demonstrations and how authorities have responded\, including pressure on academic institutions and confrontations around the University of Belgrade. The discussion will focus on how right-wing conservatism and illiberal governance trends can constrain academic freedoms through intimidation\, reputational attacks\, procedural pressure\, and shrinking space for dissent\, including how the current developments may affect women and men differently in academia and public life (e.g. exposure to harassment\, risk-taking\, caregiving\, and differential access to voice and leadership). Finally\, the speakers will outline practical ways universities\, staff\, and students can defend academic freedom – through solidarity\, documentation\, collective action\, and institutional safeguards that protect speech and participation. \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nShare with your network!\n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:Introducing the GenderSAFE Institutional Assessment Tool
DESCRIPTION:Introducing the GenderSAFE Institutional Assessment Tool\n  \nWednesday 26 November\n11.00 – 12:30 CET\n \n Register Now!\n \n \n \n \n \n While many institutions adopt policies against gender-based violence\, too often they lack the structures\, resources\, or monitoring mechanisms to ensure these policies are effective in practice. The result is a persistent gap between formal commitments and the lived realities of staff and students. The GenderSAFE Institutional Assessment Tool provides a structured framework to evaluate an organisation’s capacity and progress in addressing gender-based violence and supports institutions in adopting coherent\, sustainable strategies across prevention\, protection\, provision of services\, prosecution\, partnerships\, and policy (7P model).  \nJoin us on Wednesday\, 26 November at 11.00 CET to explore how this tool can turn reflection into action. You’ll learn how the self-assessment is structured\, what kind of tailored feedback institutions receive\, tips and advice on completing the assessment\, and how repeating the exercise over time can support meaningful development and inform policy cycles. Universities that have already tested the tool will share their experience\, offering practical insight into its usefulness\, added value and next steps.  \nThe session brings together those involved in the development and early testing of the tool: Marcela Linková (Czech Academy of Sciences)\, Panagiota Polykarpou (Yellow Window)\, Iveta Bayerová (Charles University) and Rachel Payne & Jennifer Kirman (Oxford Brookes University). SUMMARY:Webinar: Professional boundaries and sexual harassment in academic settings
DESCRIPTION:Professional boundaries and sexual harassmentin academic settings\n \nThursday 14 November 2024\n15:00 – 16:30 CET\nOnline [Zoom]\n \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n The term ‘professional boundaries’ denotes appropriate standards of behaviour by professionals in working with adult clients\, patients or students (Cooper\, 2012). However\, in higher education\, shared understandings of appropriate boundaries are often lacking. At the same time\, power imbalances between staff and early career researchers (PhDs\, postdoctoral researchers) create a context where sexual harassment and other abuses of power are more likely to occur; around 10% of women postgraduate students are targeted for sexual harassment during their studies (Cantor et al\, 2019; Australian Human Rights Commission\, 2017). \nIn this webinar\, Dr Anna Bull will introduce key points relating to professional boundaries in academic settings\, followed by the discussion of an anonymised case study\, used with permission\, of boundary-blurring behaviours. This will be followed by a conversation in plenary and a Q&A session. The case study\, along with details of how we will hold a safer space\, will be shared a few days in advance of the session. \n \nLearning objectives\n\nTo introduce the concept of professional boundaries and explore its relevance in academic settings\nTo recognise boundary-blurring behaviours that constitute or enable sexual harassment\nTo understand how power imbalances and poor professional boundaries contribute to enabling sexual harassment to occur\n\nTarget audience\n\nUniversity students (all levels)\, early career researchers\, academic staff.\nAny staff involved in supporting postgraduate research students and supervisors\nAny staff involved in addressing gender-based violence in higher education (e.g. Gender Equality officers\, Gender Equality committees\, task forces or working groups on gender-based violence\, human resources personnel and legal advisors\, etc.).\n\nFacilitation and moderation\nThe webinar will be facilitated by Dr Anna Bull (University of York) and moderated by Ana Belén Amil (Central European University).
