SUMMARY:Webinar: Professional boundaries and sexual harassment in academic settings
DESCRIPTION:Professional boundaries and sexual harassmentin academic settings\n \nThursday 14 November 2024\n15:00 – 16:30 CET\nOnline [Zoom]\n \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n The term ‘professional boundaries’ denotes appropriate standards of behaviour by professionals in working with adult clients\, patients or students (Cooper\, 2012). However\, in higher education\, shared understandings of appropriate boundaries are often lacking. At the same time\, power imbalances between staff and early career researchers (PhDs\, postdoctoral researchers) create a context where sexual harassment and other abuses of power are more likely to occur; around 10% of women postgraduate students are targeted for sexual harassment during their studies (Cantor et al\, 2019; Australian Human Rights Commission\, 2017). \nIn this webinar\, Dr Anna Bull will introduce key points relating to professional boundaries in academic settings\, followed by the discussion of an anonymised case study\, used with permission\, of boundary-blurring behaviours. This will be followed by a conversation in plenary and a Q&A session. The case study\, along with details of how we will hold a safer space\, will be shared a few days in advance of the session. \n \nLearning objectives\n\nTo introduce the concept of professional boundaries and explore its relevance in academic settings\nTo recognise boundary-blurring behaviours that constitute or enable sexual harassment\nTo understand how power imbalances and poor professional boundaries contribute to enabling sexual harassment to occur\n\nTarget audience\n\nUniversity students (all levels)\, early career researchers\, academic staff.\nAny staff involved in supporting postgraduate research students and supervisors\nAny staff involved in addressing gender-based violence in higher education (e.g. Gender Equality officers\, Gender Equality committees\, task forces or working groups on gender-based violence\, human resources personnel and legal advisors\, etc.).\n\nFacilitation and moderation\nThe webinar will be facilitated by Dr Anna Bull (University of York) and moderated by Ana Belén Amil (Central European University). \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nShare with your network!\n Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Click to share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:UGOT/GenderSAFE seminar: Understanding and Improving Gender-Based Violence Reporting in Academic Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Understanding and Improving Gender-Based Violence Reporting in Academic Institutions\n\n\n10 June 2024\, 12:00 – 13:00 CET\n  \nOnline&\nDepartment of Sociology and Work Science\,University of Gothenburg F417\, Campus Haga\n\n  \n \n Registration for online participants\n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers: Professor Anne Laure Humbert and Dr Anna Bull \nChair: Sofia Strid \nThis seminar will examine dynamics of reporting gender-based violence and sexual harassment within academic institutions across Europe and the UK. Two presentations will explore how institutional responses\, shaped by deeply ingrained gender regimes\, affect the outcomes and experiences of individuals reporting such incidents. Through a combination of multilevel quantitative analysis and qualitative research\, the session will highlight the challenges posed by current reporting mechanisms and discuss potential strategies for creating more effective and supportive environments within academic settings. Anne Laure Humbert will present data from an extensive survey conducted across 15 European countries\, focusing on the academic consequences for those who report gender-based violence. These findings emphasise that the severity of consequences is related to the victims’ confidence in institutional responses. This confidence not only impacts the academic repercussions but also acts as a protective factor\, particularly among staff members\, reducing the negative academic impacts associated with reporting gender-based violence incidents. Anna Bull will discuss findings from interviews with students and staff in UK higher education who have navigated formal reporting processes for gender-based violence or harassment. This presentation will demonstrate how institutional gender regimes—through aspects like power dynamics and gender-neutral policies—critically influence the stages of formal reporting\, from evidence collection to assessment\, often undermining the success of such complaints. \nBoth presentations will argue for the necessity of systemic changes—beyond mere procedural adjustments—to address the underlying causes of gender-based violence and harassment. They will propose fostering a culture of respect\, building trust in institutional processes\, and establishing more effective\, gender-sensitive reporting mechanisms as essential steps toward this goal. \nThis session aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how gender dynamics and institutional processes intersect\, fostering a dialogue on evolving academic institutions to ensure justice and support for all\, especially those vulnerable to gender-based violence. \n  \nAbout the speakers\nAnne Laure Humbert\, PhD\, is Professor of Gender and Statistics and Co-Director of the Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice at Oxford Brookes University\, and a visiting researcher at the Department of Sociology and Work Science at University of Gothenburg. Anne is very experienced in gender equality research at national\, EU and international level\, policy analysis and assessment as well as gender statistics. She specialises in applying quantitative methods to comparative social and economic analysis\, particularly in relation to work and organisations\, entrepreneurship\, and work-life balance. She holds a visiting position at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London. \nDr Anna Bull is a Senior Lecturer in Education and Social Justice at the University of York\, and co-director of The 1752 Group\, a research and campaigning organisation working to address staff sexual misconduct in higher education. As well as multiple academic and public-facing publications on sexual misconduct in HE\, Anna was an academic advisor to the National Union of Students for their report Power in the Academy. She sits on national advisory boards to address gender-based violence in higher education in the UK and Ireland\, and co-authored The 1752 Group and McAllister Olivarius’ Sector Guidance to address staff sexual misconduct in UK higher education. She has also carried out research into inequalities in classical music and music education\, as well as sexual harassment in the film and television industry in the report Safe to Speak Up? Sexual harassment in the UK film and television industry since #MeToo. \n \n Registration for online participants\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nShare with your network!\n Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Click to share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:Session: "Ending gender-based violence in higher education institutions: Policies and problems"
DESCRIPTION:Session: “Ending gender-based violence in higher education institutions: Policies and problems” \nat Third International Conference of the journal “Scuola Democratica”\n\nConvenors: Marcela Linková (Czech Academy of Sciences\, Czech Republic); Lut Mergaert (Yellow Window\, Belgium); Sofia Strid (University of Gothenburg\, Sweden) \nThe session will include four presentations\, including the following presentation from GenderSAFE: \n“Preventing Gender-Based Violence in Academia: Balancing Universal Principles and Contextual Demands in a European Code of Conduct” \nMarina Cacace\, Claudia Aglietti (Knowledge & Innovation)\, Ana Belén Amil (Central European University) \n\n\nAlthough gender-based violence is prevalent in all countries and all social\, organisational and professional settings\, how it is conceptualised and understood\, and to what extent or in what forms it is tolerated or opposed\, is strongly influenced by contextual factors (Humbert et al. 2023). In any context\, social\, cultural\, organisational\, regulatory and other factors interact at different levels to produce manifestations of gender-based violence that have both universal and specific components. Higher education and research institutions are no exception\, with gender-based violence now recognised as a widespread systemic problem\, with negative consequences for institutions\, individuals and societies (Mergaert\, Linkova & Strid 2023). \nFrom this perspective\, gender-based violence\, like the gender inequality that underlies it\, can be qualified as a highly complex social problem due to its multiple causes\, lack of a single dominant solution\, context-sensitivity and intricate links with other societal issues (Eden & Wagstaff 2021). Complexity refers not only to gender-based violence as a social problem\, but inevitably extends to the interventions and policies designed to address it\, as well as to the system of actors involved\, making it difficult to think of standard tools and solutions. \nTo overcome the difficulty of identifying common ways to address complex\, context-sensitive social problems\, multi-stakeholder engagement strategies are often proposed (Cashore et al. 2019)\, where affected communities participatively define the principles and design the processes that would be part of the proposed solution. Involving a wider range of stakeholders from different countries and types of institutions would help to address the need for context sensitivity (Reidl et al. 2020)\, allowing the consequences of different demands on different types of stakeholders to be anticipated. \nThis is the challenge being addressed by the GenderSAFE project\, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme for research and innovation\, which will design and test a standard template for a European-level code of conduct for addressing gender-based violence. \nOur contribution will first examine the issues that arise from the involvement of multiple stakeholders in the process of defining common tools and procedures in a highly heterogeneous context\, and then explore the choice made in GenderSAFE to address this challenge through the creation of a Community of Practice (CoP)\, understood as a social learning environment (Wenger 1999). The CoP will be the tool to bridge the tension between the need for standardised approaches to gender-based violence on the one hand\, and the specific\, contextual needs of each participating institution on the other. Through the CoP\, the relationship between general principles and diverse social and institutional practices will be deepened as a critical nexus in the development of profound and sustainable change processes. \n\n\n \n Read more about the session\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nShare with your network!\n Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Click to share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email
