“AfricaMuseum, or the Royal Museum for Central Africa, is one of the ten federal scientific institutions in Belgium. AfricaMuseum is proud to have signed the GenderSAFE pledge – a pledge for zero tolerance to gender-based violence in academia and research.
In addition to its museum activities, AfricaMuseum is part of the European Research Area as a research institute working on subjects as diverse as fisheries and forestry, volcanoes and landslides, agriculture, new species descriptions, musicology, linguistics, history, and archaeology, to mention just a few.
We have a deep responsibility to engage with different cultures and histories. For this, we need an inclusive and safe environment – not just for the communities we serve, but also for the people who work for and with us – our scientists, student researchers, technicians, and administrative staff.
GenderSAFE’s zero-tolerance code of conduct helps us ensure that the AfricaMuseum is a space where all individuals can feel respected, valued, and safe. It’s a vital part of our mission to foster dialogue and understanding across cultures, break down barriers, challenge outdated narratives, share discoveries, and offer a space where every voice is heard – especially those that have been silenced in the past.
We know that the fight for gender equality is far from over. AfricaMuseum wants to be part of the solution. Join us and many others by taking the GenderSAFE pledge too!”
