GenderSAFE Information Pack: supporting safer higher education and research environments

Jun 22, 2026 | Blog, Outputs, Project news

A new information pack introducing GenderSAFE tools, guides, and training resources has been released to support institutions in improving their response to gender-based violence. Designed for organisations at all stages, the toolkit offers practical, step-by-step guidance to help build stronger, more coordinated processes.

The resources are particularly valuable for institutions in the early stages of developing policies and apporaches, while also providing structured support for those seeking to review or expand existing frameworks. Key areas of focus include developing clear and coherent policy structures, enhancing internal coordination, and building institutional capacity.

A central goal of the GenderSAFE approach is to promote consistent, survivor-centred responses across organisations. The toolkit encourages institutions to move beyond ad hoc case handling toward more systematic, organisation-wide practices.

By adopting these tools, institutions can create more effective and coherent mechanisms to prevent and address gender-based violence, ensuring safer environments and more reliable support for survivors.

A Structured, Three-Step Pathway for Change

To help organizations transition from ad hoc, reactive case handling to institutionalized, structured practice, the GenderSAFE Information Pack details a clear three-step pathway:

  • Step 1: Assess Current Frameworks via the Institutional Self-Assessment Tool Hosted within the UniSAFE Toolkit, this collaborative tool allows institutions to thoroughly audit their current policies, identify operational gaps, and receive a tailored maturity-level report alongside a performance spider graph.
  • Step 2: Build Lasting Capacity with the GenderSAFE Training Programme A collection of publicly available, multilingual training materials (available in EN, GR, IT, FR, HU, PT, ES, CZ). Utilizing participatory formats like case studies and role-plays, it equips HR professionals, equality officers, and leadership with trauma-informed and survivor-centered response skills.
  • Step 3: Harmonize Policies through the Model Policy Framework Currently being finalized and tested within the GenderSAFE Community of Practice, this upcoming framework provides direct guidance for drafting or revising institutional policies across seven core organizational pillars: prevalence, prevention, protection, prosecution, provision of services, policies, and partnerships.
